Narthex Entrance

This space precedes the Nave and acts as a vestibule. It is an intermediate zone between the profane and the sacred. In the past, you had to be baptized in order to enter a Catholic building. Non-baptized people were allowed to stay in the narthex to hear and attend the service.

In the narthex, were buried several governors in colonial times.
In the slave society of the colonial era, the arrangement of the benches was established according to a hierarchical order based on color.
02 small hidden doors give access to the galleries upstairs, from which the faithful could once attend Mass.
